  • Introduction to light scattering theory and applications
  • The use of a Zimm Plot to determine the molar mass, the radius, and the second virial coefficient of a dissolved sample
  • Analysis of unfractionated samples through batch or microbatch techniques
  • Coupling Size Exclusion Chromatography (SEC) with Multiangle Light Scattering (MALS) to determine the absolute molar mass or radius distribution of a polymer sample
  • The use of SEC/MALS data to determine polymer conformation, branching, and intrinsic viscosity
  • The determination of dn/dc values through on-line and off-line techniques

Who Should Attend:

The lessons learned in LSU and Dyna-LSU will be of tremendous benefit to those individuals who:

  • Purchase a new DAWN, miniDAWN and/or DynaPro light scattering instrument
  • Change job responsibilities, and will be using a DAWN, miniDAWN and/or DynaPro for the first time
  • Have been using a DAWN, miniDAWN and/or DynaPro and want to increase their knowledge of light scattering theory and its applications
  • Are responsible for finding new applications for light scattering within their research group

Teaching Format:

The lessons are taught by combining lectures, quizzes, hands on lab work, and individual instruction based upon the background and application of each student. The LSU Training Manual and CD is a valuable take-home resource for practical applications. With ten instructors and a maximum of 18 students there is ample time for individual help. Students are encouraged to bring their light scattering data files for individual consultations. Social time is also scheduled to allow the students to learn from each other and to interact with Wyatt Technology's staff in a more relaxed atmosphere.
